This Week's Iconic Dress: Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch

We love fashion history and icons at Closet and with that in mind we have decided to start a weekly post about the most iconic dresses/outfits of all time. Each week we'll feature an iconic outfit or dress made famous by it's wearer, whether it be from a movie, television or a red carpet event.

To start off we are featuring the Marilyn Monroe white halter dress, possibly one of the 20th century's most famous images, made even more famous when she stepped over the sidewalk grate in 1955 on the set of The Seven Year Itch.

Also we'd love to hear your thoughts on who you think has worn an iconic outfit, so please leave a comment.

  3. This is perhaps the most iconic dress of all time. Even those worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's, while incredible, are not as recognizable.

Debbie Reynolds now owns this white dress designed by Oscar winning designer Billy Travilla.

Interestingly, Marilyn wore the most iconic dress of all time in 7YI, and also the most expensive dress ever sold at auction, which was her original Jean Luis gown that she wore to sing Happy Birthday Mr. President to JFK in 1962. Price tag? Over $1.3 million.

  4. Unbelievable isn't it, $1.3 million for a dress! I've always wondered who now owned the white dress. Thanks Scott for letting us know.
